Dr. Amberys R. “Toby” Whittle, age 83, died February 11, 2019 at Landmark Hospital in Savannah.   He was born in Burlington, N.C. in 1935 and received three degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He taught at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee 1961-64 and received the M.A. degree in 1965 and the Ph.D. degree in 1968 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  His book and journal publications were in the field of American and biblical literature.

Dr. Whittle was a faculty member at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, 1968 to 1983, leaving as Professor and Chairman of the Department of English to join the faculty of Georgia Southern University, from which he retired as Professor Emeritus in 1997.   He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and often taught the Adult Bible Class there.   For many years, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro and a volunteer for the Statesboro Food Bank.  His favorite hobbies were genealogy and digital photography.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dr. Natalie Whittle; two sons, Derrick  W. Whittle (Megumi) of Cupertino, California and Justin D. Whittle (Christine) of Vienna, Virginia; two granddaughters, Grace K. Whittle of Cupertino and Lauren C. Whittle of Vienna, Virginia; a brother, Gary L. Whittle (Susan) of Raleigh, N.C.; and two nieces: Emily Medlin of  Cary, N.C. and Annie W. Wang of Irvine, California.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church with Rev. Frank Logue officiating.
